How do I substitute/waive a course ... ?

If you feel that you have previously taken a course that is comparable to a course requirement in your program please contact your advisor for further direction.  Please be prepared to have a copy of either the Course Syllabus or Course Description from that respective catalog when you meet with your advisor.

How do I petition or appeal a university requirement ... ?

If you would to request a petition or appeal to a university requirement please contact your advisor for more information.  If you have a legitimate request your advisor will assist you in filling out the appropriate forms.

Why do I have a hold ... ?

Various offices places holds on student records for many reasons that include but are not limited to academic success and account balances.  Please check with our Front Desk staff for more information on whether you have any holds on your record.  Only the office that placed the hold on your record can release that hold.

How do I know if I'm graduating ... ?

It's highly encouraged to see your advisor on year prior to your expected semester of graduation so that they can run a Degree Compliance on your program to see what requirements you have left to complete your degree.  Please be aware that it's the student's responsibility to apply for graduation and make sure they meet all requirements.

Why must I complete a Criminal Background Check (CBK) and Indemnification Agreement ... ?

Certain course that either entail you going outside of the university or classes that include teaching children will require that you fill out a Criminal Background Check (CBK) and Indemnification Form.  Additionally, if you are pursuing a Teaching Certification Program you will need to always maintain a Criminal Background Check in your student file for Fitness to Teach reasons.

How do I obtain a clearance to take a restricted course ... ?

Some courses make require a clearance prior to being able to register to that class.  These classes will be notated in the "notes" area of the schedule on ASAP.  These forms can be found in the Forms section ofour website. It generally takes 2 weeks to process a form.

What are the admission requirements to get accepted to the Undergraduate Teacher Certification program ... ?

Attend a Teacher Certification Information Meeting or view the online tutorial

Maintain assigned UTSA Lonestar account

Complete a Teacher Certification Application via ASAP

Attain Junior Standing (60 semester credit hours) with at least 9 hours completed at UTSA

Complete all core requirements with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or better

Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) on all coursework completed at UTSA & a cumulative GPA  of at least 2.5.

Submit authorization for a Texas Dept. of Public Safety Criminal Background Report

Attain passing scores on a state approved assessment test (TASP or THEA) or meet exemption requirements as outlined by COEHD guidelines.  Visit www.utsa.edu/testing for THEA testing dates and times.

Earn a grade of a C or better in ENG 1023 and a C or better in one of the following courses: COM 1043, COM 1053, COM 2113, COM 2123, SPN 3003, or SPN 3033.

What is the Associate Arts in Teaching (AAT) ... ?

The Associate of Arts in Teaching is designed for students pursuing careers in teaching, primarily grades K-8. Students in the program will gain an understanding of curriculum & instruction and teaching to special populations. A field experience is also a requirement of this program.

Check with a UTSA Advisor to ensure that courses taken at Northwest Vista College are the courses that will apply to the appropriate degree.
