About Advising

Undergraduate students may apply for admission to the teacher certification program when they have accumulated 60 hours of college-level work. In order to be admitted, students must attend an undergraduate teacher certification meeting. (Please note: When you have accumulated 60 hours and if you are having problems meeting requirements for entry into the teacher certification program, it is very important that you make an appointment with an academic advisor in the COEHD Advising and Certification Center (ACC) to discuss possible options.)

ELEMENTARY PROGRAMS: Undergraduate students who would like to teach EC-4 (Pre Kindergarten- 4), 4-8 or Special Education EC-12 must major in Interdisciplinary Studies (IDS). Students have the option of choosing from:

  • Elementary Programs:
    • EC-4 Generalist
    • EC-4 Bilingual Generalist
  • Middle School Programs:
    • 4-8 Bilingual Generalist
    • 4-8 English Language Arts, Reading, and Social Studies
    • 4-8 Mathematics and Science
    • 4-8 English as a Second Language
  • All-Level Programs:
    • Special Education EC-12

All of these students are advised in the ACC for degree and certification requirements

SECONDARY PROGRAMS: Undergraduate students who wish to teach in a SECONDARY setting (grades 8 - 12) must major in an academic area that is also a teaching field.  They are advised in the ACC for certification requirements and in the advising office of their academic major for degree requirements.

Undergraduate secondary programs are available in the following teaching fields:

  • Secondary Grades 8-12 in the following areas:
    • English, Language Arts, and Reading
    • History
    • Life Science
    • Math
    • Physical Science
    • Science (with emphasis in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics)
    • Social Studies
    • Spanish*
    • Speech
    • Technology Applications

*Expiring in 2007-2008.  Contact a Teacher Certification specialist in regard to the Spanish certificate.

ALL-LEVEL PROGRAMS: These programs enable undergraduate students to teach in ALL-LEVEL settings (EC-12).
Undergraduate all level programs are available in the following teaching fields:

  • All-Level Programs (EC-12) in the following areas:
    • Kinesiology
    • Music
    • Special Education
    • Health

All of these students are advised in the ACC for degree and certification requirements with the exception of music. Students who would like to teach either Instrumental or Choral Music are advised in the ACC for certification requirements and in the Division of Music for degree requirements.
