Dear Fall 2008 Student Teacher:
This Information Packet will serve as your source of information regarding registration and first day of class meeting details. Please keep it in a safe place.

You have applied for Fall 2008 student teaching. Records will be reviewed during June and July 2008 to determine your eligibility for student teaching.

If you are lacking prerequisite coursework or if your GPA is below the minimum required for student teaching, or if there are other circumstances that would deem you ineligible for student teaching, you will receive a Denial Letter during June or July 2008. The Denial Letter will state the reason you have been denied for fall 2008 student teaching.
If you are eligible for student teaching, you will not receive any letter or type of reminder from the Office of Student Teaching. If you are not sure of your eligibility status, you may contact your advisor or the student teaching office in early August.
If you are eligible for student teaching, you will be expected to:
(1) Register for your student teaching course
(2) Confirm or decline your intent to student teach by contacting me at janet.scott@utsa.edu. Please confirm or decline your intent to student teach, regardless of your eligibility to student teach, by May 1, 2008.
(3) Be present on the first day of class, August 27, 2008.

Please read the enclosed information for details about student teaching. Keep the information in a safe place. You will not receive another letter or any type of reminder from us about student teaching unless you are deemed to be ineligible for Fall 2008, in which case you’ll receive a Denial Letter.

I look forward to working with you during the Fall 2008 semester! I’ll see you Wednesday , August 27, 2008!

Sincerely,

Janet Scott
Director of Student Teaching

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR Fall 2008
STUDENT TEACHER COHORT

Your Student Teaching Placement: All student teaching placements are coordinated by the Director of Student Teaching using the information that you provided on the “Student Teaching Application-Fall 2008” form. Please do not attempt to arrange your own student teaching placement by contacting principals, teachers or other school district personnel as this may jeopardize the relationships we have established with all of our cooperating school districts.
Your student teaching placement information will be given to you at the first class meeting for Fall 2008 Student Teachers on Wednesday, August 27, 2008. We will not be able to provide you with any information about your placement until that date.

Registration: Fall 2008 registration begins in April. Please register for the appropriate course as indicated on the chart below. Student teaching courses do not require advisor codes. If you have questions about the registration process, please refer to the online Fall 2008 schedule. Please Note: It is important that you register for the correct section. The sections will not fill up.

Your Schedule: Beginning August 27, 2008, please make arrangements at your place of employment, with the day care center, etc. to be available during daytime hours which correspond to those of the public schools, approximately 7:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. While your daily schedule may fluctuate, you are obligated to be available as needed during those hours. During the first week of the Fall 2008 semester, August 27, 28, and 29, you will attend seminars and meetings at the UTSA campus. Dress will be casual. You will begin in your school placement during the second week of the semester. Dress will be professional. The last scheduled day for Fall 2008 student teaching is Thursday, December 4, 2008.

Your Obligation to Student Teaching: You have made the decision to perform the student teaching component of your certification program during the Fall 2008 semester. The student teaching semester requires a huge commitment of time and energy on your part if student teaching is to be done well. In addition, school district personnel officers have indicated that performance in student teaching is a very important factor when making a decision about whether to hire a first-year teacher. You will be placed in a classroom which will contain children who will be depending on you for academic instruction and guidance. Therefore, if at all possible, we strongly discourage you from working and/or taking additional classes during this student teaching semester. Student teachers who commit themselves only to student teaching have a more successful semester than those who are obligated to jobs and/or other classes. Under no circumstances will you be permitted to enroll in additional coursework during the student teaching semester which exceeds six semester credit hours or in classes that meet during the regular instruction day.

TExES: Completion of TExES requirements is not a prerequisite for admittance to student teaching; however, students are strongly encouraged to complete TExES requirements prior to the student teaching semester.
