The UTSA Teacher Certification Program:

Admission Requirements  

You should now be aware of what major you will need to choose in order to pursue a teaching certificate in the public schools.  

What else is required to become a teacher?

You will also need to apply for admission into the UTSA Teacher Certification Program. Completion of a teacher certification program is required by the state of Texas to obtain your teaching certificate. You have to be at least a Junior (have completed at least 60 credit hours) in order to be eligible for admission.  

However, as a freshmen it is essential that you are aware of the program admission requirements. The grades you make and the courses you take as a freshman and sophomore will impact your ability to be accepted into the teacher certification program.

UTSA Teacher Certification Program Admission Requirements

1.  Must have completed 60 hours (Junior)

2.  Must have completed all CORE coursework

3.  Minimum CORE GPA  of 2.5

4.  Minimum UTSA GPA of 2.5

5.  Minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.5

6.  Grade of “C” or better in ENG 1023

7.  Grade of “C” or better in one of the following courses:

     COM 1043; COM 1053; COM 2123; SPN 2103 or SPN 3033

8.  Passing scores on TASP or THEA <OR> Meet exemption requirements

9.  Submit an authorization for a Texas Department of Public Safety criminal  

     background report

Recommended Freshman Course

It is recommended that you take the following course during your freshman year.

IDS 2013 – Introduction to Learning & Teaching in a Diverse Society

This course requires 20 hours of classroom observation in a local school (field work) and you will need dependable transportation.

• Don't drink and drive.

• Don't shoplift.

• Don't do drugs.

• Don't hang with "friends" who do use!



• If a "friend" asks you to do something wrong, just say "No" and find a real friend!
